UNOCAL CORP., Sugar Land, Texas 1974-2000

Consulting Geologist 1994-2000

Coordinator-Structure and Remote Sensing

Structural consultant in technology group; coordinated group of 3-5 professional and technical personnel; planned, developed and tracked technical projects.

Personal Projects:
  • Enhanced understanding of structural elements of Kutei Basin, Indonesia, as part of multi-disciplinary team supporting exploration program leading to first commercial deep water oil discovery in Indonesia (~280 MMBOE).
  • Determined tectonic evolution of Mad Dog discovery and adjacent deep water Gulf of Mexico structures to guide evaluation and exploration drilling.
  • Carried out mapping, seismic interpretation and 3D modeling as part of an integrated effort that led to discovery of two major Indonesian geothermal fields.  Received special award.
  • Determined structural evolution of the Krishna-Godavari Basin, India, as part of multi-disciplinary team that evaluated the exploration potential of the basin.
  • Outlined tectonic history of South Caspian basin using seismic grid and literature.  Worked with multi-company team to evaluate prospects leading to two sub-commercial discoveries.
  • As part of a team, mapped and interpreted structure and stratigraphy of El Najo geothermal concession, Nicaragua.
  • Analyzed structure and fault compartmentalization of Uch gas field, Pakistan as part of new ventures team.
  • Interpreted seismic grid and constructed restored sections as part of multi-disciplinary team evaluating Xihu Trough, East China Sea.
  • Developed, coordinated and presented Company seminars on tectonics, structural styles, and balanced cross section techniques to several hundred geoscientists.
  • Determined fracture distribution in Horizon field, Dutch North Sea.  Team effort led to successful development of this marginal oil field by carefully targeted horizontal wells.
  • Analyzed cement-occluded oil-bearing fractures in Trinidad exploration well and identified area where a younger set of fractures was likely.  Drilling confirmed open, but wet fractures.
  • Analyzed structural history of Indonesian fault block using seismic data and restored cross sections.  Subsequent drilling discovered the currently undeveloped Berukang field.
  • Outlined geologic history of southern Kutei Basin as part of multi-disciplinary team.  Subsequent drilling found Saguni field with 30 MMBO, 115 BCF reserves.

Unocal Energy Resources Division: Brea, California

Senior Research Associate 1989-1994

  • Analyzed fracture distribution in South Casper Creek (WY), Trading Bay (AK) and Salak (Indonesia) fields aiding placement of development wells and secondary recovery efforts.
  • Evaluated seismic and well data leading to acquisition of Syrian block based on team recommendation.  Received special award.  Drilling found non-commercial oil.
  • Constructed cross sections and restored sections across the Alberta thrust belt, Bolivian and Peruvian sub-Andean thrust belts, and Angola as part of multi-disciplinary evaluations.
  • Mapped Mississippi Canyon sub-salt prospects and constructed restored sections to outline evolution of salt structures and predict distribution of reservoir.
  • Constructed regional cross sections and restored sections using seismic grid covering Khorat Plateau, Thailand, and determined that major structures were unfavorable strongly inverted grabens.  Subsequent drilling was unsuccessful.

Supervisor, Structure & Petrology Group 1985-1989

  • Managed group of 20 to 25 geoscientists and technicians supporting Company exploration.
  • Conducted field studies in Progreso Basin, Ecuador.  Based on team recommendations concession was not obtained; subsequent exploration by others was unsuccessful.

Research Associate 1982-1985

  • Determined fracture orientation in Monterey Fm. of Santa Maria Basin, CA.  Results applied to directional development drilling in Pt. Pedernales, Orcutt and Santa Maria Valley fields.
  • Conducted field studies in Colombian Llanos and foothills as part of team to test relationship of remote sensing anomalies to known fields and map structures on Ariporo block.
  • Interpreted Landsat and SAR imagery in Huallaga Basin, Peru and Colombian thrust belt.
  • Mapped surface geology and integrated with wells to construct regional cross section across Marathon fold belt, Texas, as part of team.  Results demonstrated that only small to moderately sized structures could be expected and exploration program was ended.

Senior Research Geologist 1979-1982

  • Led field parties that analyzed structure and stratigraphy of the central Brooks Range, AK foothills.  Exploration leases acquired as a result were never drilled.

Research Geologist 1974-1979

  • Carried out stratigraphic, structural and source rock studies in the Alaska Peninsula as a team.  Bristol Bay blocks obtained were not drilled due to environmental constraints.
  • Analyzed structure of Atlantic coast prospects; mapped Mesozoic rift basins for OCS sale.
  • Carried out regional study of Santa Maria Basin; results applied in Orcutt field development.
